Dr. Ashley Berns is a clinical psychologist with extensive training and specialized expertise in clinical neuropsychology and cognitive neuroscience. She earned her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (PsyD) with a Neuropsychology track from the APA-accredited program at Pacific University, complemented by a Master of Science Degree in Cognitive Neuroscience from the University of Oregon. Dr. Berns completed an Honors Thesis during her Undergraduate Degree at the University of Oregon which investigated ADHD allele variants and the the subsequent impact of parenting interactions and environmental factors. Her clinical foundation is further supported by a postdoctoral fellowship in Clinical Neuropsychology at ChristianaCare Hospital, where she refined her skills in complex neuropsychological assessment and consultation-liaison services.
Dr. Berns’ professional experience spans a diverse array of high-acuity settings, including academic medical centers, inpatient psychiatry, neurology, and integrated health systems such as Kaiser Permanente. Her clinical practice is characterized by a comprehensive, evidence-based approach to assessing and treating patients with multifaceted presentations, including neurodegenerative disorders, traumatic brain injury, stroke, epilepsy, and complex psychiatric comorbidities such as PTSD, ASD, and schizoaffective disorder. She is proficient in delivering trauma-informed care, cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), and specialized psychoeducation tailored to the needs of adult and geriatric populations.
In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Berns has a robust background in clinical research, particularly regarding cognitive aging and Alzheimer’s disease. Her research portfolio includes work on modifiable risk factors for cognitive decline, vascular hemodynamics in neurodegeneration, and the intersection of psychoneuroimmunology and neurological disorders. Over the years, Dr. Berns has presented her research at conferences across the country such as Seattle, Portland, Washington, DC, Philadelphia, Arizona, and Stanford University in California.
